MEECO is a non-governmental Organization based at Mwanakwerekwe in West region of Zanzibar, it’s under the guidance of Minister of Work in Zanzibar Horn. Haroun Ali Suleiman. MEECO was established in 2009 and official register on 22^nd of March 2011, under the Society Act No. 6 of 1995.

MEECO is a membership organization that aim at working with community in Mwanakwerekwe in addressing environment ethical and Cultural change that emerge within Mwanakwerekwe area particularly among the youth, Current MEECO has 45 members including 20 male and 25 female, among whom 20 are youth.

Among the objective of MEECO is to educate community members on environmental, ethics and cultural issue that impinge their community development.

Apart from Environment, MEECO deals with protect, conserve and educate the society on it. MEECO conduct study tour in rural and urban area to educate and facilitate the society on importance of environmental issue in the world.

In Cultural issue, MEECO supervises and protect the nature of Zanzibarian cultural value.MEECO has planed to make various programs such seminar,film,debate with student to discuss on the rules of Zanzibarian Cultural.

Incase of Ethics MEECO provides ethical knowledge to the society. Some of activities here is to collect youth in difference task in order to remove bad concentration or bad things such as drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, stealing and other illegal issues in their life activities. For example MEECO has sport team, sarakasi and drama

Apart from sport teams, MEECO has Santiago Football Club and Wagumu Football Club.As we said early MEECO has Sarakasi team is known as “ MEECO TALENT GROUP”

What is MEECO TALENT GROUP?

This is the group which established by Mwanakwerekwe Environmental Ethics and Cultural Organization (MEECO) for the purpose of developing the Mwanakwerekwe youth’s talent and keeping them in good behavior by removing bad concentration or bad things such as drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, thief and other illegal issues in their daily life activities.

As we know Mwanakwerekwe is a semi-urban locality located 5 km from Zanzibar Town in west district. The locality stretches itself in 1 km distance north and south of the main road that leads to East Coastal tourism belt of Unguja south region. Being in western district of Urban west region of Zanzibar, the 16760 Mwanakwerekwe inhabitants live in a semi-urban life that has complete flavor of urbanization while the sometime exposed to climate and environment that signals rural settings.

Under these circumstances, youth particularly those who are less successful in their secondary education found them selves in dilemma when come to choice of carrier. Instead many youth have failed to make appropriate choice and have found them selves recruited in gangs that mostly engage in un-authorized activities such as stealing and environmental destruction to earn their living. These activities as result make them to be highly inclined to illicit behavior such as alcoholism, drug abused and unprotected sex.

MEECO TALENT GROUP has consist youth under 15 ages who are currently students in different Primary and Secondary Schools in Unguja the target is to keep them in good behavior.
